Oil, Bloody Oil

PanAm Flight 103
243 passengers
16 crew members

11 people on the ground in Lockerbie, southern Scotland

As “the cockpit broke off, tornado-force winds tore through the fuselage, tearing clothes off passengers and turning insecurely-fixed items like food and drink trolleys into lethal objects. Because of the sudden change in air pressure, the gases inside the passengers’ bodies would have expanded to four times their normal volume, causing their lungs to swell and then collapse. People and objects not fixed down would have been blown out of the aircraft into the 46 °C (?50.8 °F) outside air, their 31,000-foot (9,400 m) fall lasting about two minutes. Some passengers remained attached to the fuselage by their seat belts, crashing in Lockerbie strapped to their seats.

“Although the passengers would have lost consciousness through lack of oxygen, forensic examiners believe some of them might have regained consciousness as they fell toward oxygen-rich lower altitudes. Forensic pathologist Dr William G. Eckert, director of the Milton Helpern International Center of Forensic Sciences at Wichita State University, who examined the autopsy evidence, told Scottish police he believed the flight crew, some of the flight attendants, and 147 other passengers survived the bomb blast and depressurization of the aircraft, and may have been alive on impact. None of these passengers showed signs of injury from the explosion itself, or from the decompression and disintegration of the aircraft.”

“A boy was lying at the bottom of the steps on to the road. A young laddie with brown socks and blue trousers on. Later that evening my son-in-law asked for a blanket to cover him. I didn’t know he was dead. I gave him a lamb’s wool travelling rug thinking I’d keep him warm. Two more girls were lying dead across the road, one of them bent over garden railings. It was just as though they were sleeping. The boy lay at the bottom of my stairs for days. Every time I came back to my house for clothes he was still there. ‘My boy is still there,’ I used to tell the waiting policeman. Eventually on Saturday I couldn’t take it no more. ‘You got to get my boy lifted,’ I told the policeman. That night he was moved.”  (Bunty Galloway, as told to authors Geraldine Sheridan and Thomas Kenning in 1993)

“…the wing section hit 13 Sherwood Crescent at more than 800 km/h (500 mph) and exploded, creating a crater 47 m (155 ft) long and with a volume of 560 m³, vaporizing several houses and their foundations, and damaging 21 others so badly they had to be demolished. Four members of one family…died when their house at 15 Sherwood Crescent exploded. A fireball rose above the houses and moved toward the nearby Glasgow–Carlisle A74 dual carriageway, scorching cars in the southbound lanes…. Father Patrick Keegans, Lockerbie’s Roman Catholic priest was getting ready to go to visit his neighbours at around 7 pm [but] there was nothing left of them to bury as they and nine others were killed in the street….”

Libyan Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi was eventually convicted of the bombing of PanAm Flight 103 and sentenced to life in prison in Scotland.

From Libya, there was eventually an admission of guilt.  But there was no admission of remorse.  In a BBC Two documentary, 31 August 2008, Saif al-Gaddafi said that Libya had admitted responsibility for the Lockerbie bombing simply to get trade sanctions removed.  He also described the families of the Lockerbie victims as very greedy:  “They were asking for more money and more money and more money.”

From the Sunday Times Online:

Today we report on a letter written by Jack Straw, Britain’s justice secretary, to his Scottish counterpart in December 2007. In it he overturned a previous understanding that Mr Megrahi was exempt from a prisoner transfer programme agreed between Britain and Libya as part of the Blair-Gadaffi discussions. A few months earlier the government had been clear on that exemption. Lord Falconer, then lord chancellor, wrote to Alex Salmond, the leader of the Scottish National party, saying Libya had agreed that the Lockerbie bomber would serve out his sentence in Scotland.

What changed? The strong circumstantial evidence is that a lucrative agreement to allow BP to explore for oil off the Libyan coast was being held up by Mr Megrahi’s exemption from the prisoner transfer programme. The idea that the Westminster government had no view and no influence is not credible.

Last week we reported on a letter sent by Ivan Lewis, a Foreign Office minister, to the Scottish government. In it he said there was no legal barrier to the release of Mr Megrahi, adding: “I hope on this basis you will now feel able to consider the Libyan application in accordance with the provisions of the prisoner transfer agreement.”

And so Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi, reportedly with only a few months to live because of prostate cancer, was set free by Scotland on “compassionate grounds” after spending only 8 years in prison.  He returned to his homeland on August 21st, where he was greeted by enthusiastic crowds.

Saif al-Islam al-Gadhafi told The Glasgow Herald in an exclusive interview published August 28th, “Lockerbie is history. The next step is fruitful and productive business with Edinburgh and London.”

So the question must be stated:  Would Britain have allowed this deal to be undertaken without informing President Obama in advance?

After all, scores of Americans were murdered by his action. The families have suffered for close to twenty years. A moving account of one family’s trauma appeared in an op-ed yesterday written by Robert P. George. As George writes: “What did American officials know about the decision to free Megrahi and when did they know it? What, if anything, did our government do to try to prevent it? Remember, 180 of Megrahi’s victims were our fellow citizens. President Obama had a right to be informed in advance of what Scotland was planning to do and a duty to do everything in his power diplomatically to prevent this outrage.”

Did Barack Obama phone Gordon Brown and object strenuously before the release? Did he really not know of Britain’s plans until after it was too late? Frankly, this is rather hard to believe. If almost 200 British subjects were killed on American soil in a terrorist attack, and the perpetrator was freed in a commercial deal by the U.S. government, it is hard to imagine that any administration would not first have informed the British government of what was going to take place.

So the question remains: What did Barack Obama know, and when did he know it?

As both an apologist for dictators and a staunch supporter of drilling for oil – in other country’s backyards – it is not inconceivable that this adminstration knew about what is being called a trade of blood for oil.  According to Obama’s very own media outlet, MSNBC:

Gadhafi, now in his mid-60’s and after 40 years in power as the region’s longest-serving leader, wants to see Libya become the gateway to development in Africa.

The United States apparently agrees with part of his vision. American companies are major players in the oil industry and development projects which will try to transform this desert nation into a modern state within the next ten years.

John Rainard is the Chief Operating Officer of AECOM, a Los Angeles-based engineering firm running a $10 billion project here to rebuild Tripoli and other population centers in Libya from the ground up.  Housing, roads, water and electrical systems will form the backbones of the new country.

And from the 2008 annual report of AECOM:

The U.S. election in November 2008 produced good news for AECOM, as voters approved more than US$54 billion of state/local bond issues, and over US$60 billion of tax measures. We expect that a large portion of this money will be used to fund infrastructure projects in transportation, healthcare and environmental work in markets and geographies where we have a well-established presence. In addition, we anticipate that the U.S. economic stimulus and infrastructure packages will be focused on the type of programs that are at the core of our expertise and experience.

Only Losers Pay To Play

It was laughable enough to uncover that the left-wingnuts are actually paying people to protest against Americans protesting socialized medicine in the form of HR 3200, but now they’re presuming the Kool-Aid drinkers can actually read and that they care about what books are topping the best-seller lists.

“50 Ways You Can Help Obama Change America“, courtesy of “Progress Now”, is hitting the bookstores and in order to offset the lack of content, they’re sponsoring a contest to help spur sales:

“It never hurts to offer a little incentive, especially if your incentive has the potential to drive extreme right wingers crazy, so among our prizes is a grand-prize of a trip for two to Honolulu, Hawaii for a private tour of the hospital where President Obama was born, followed by an opportunity to take part in a community service project there on MLK Day of Service, January 18, 2010.”

They also want stories about how “people can help Obama change America for the better”.  How about we start with a most basic one:  impeach every member of the administration who is failing to uphold their oath of office.

The Las Vegas Review Journal Tells Senator Reid To “Shove It”

Still basking in the now-fading glow of “I won”, Senator Harry Reid displayed the attitude that has ordinary Americans looking at politicians like some kind of alien vermin that must be eradicated at all costs.

According to the Las Vegas Review Journal’s publisher, Sherman Frederick, just before last Wednesday’s Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Senator Reid told their director of advertising, “I hope you go out of business.”

The Journal’s response?

“You could call Reid’s remark ugly and be right. It certainly was boorish. Asinine? That goes without saying.

“But to fully capture the magnitude of Reid’s remark (and to stop him from doing the same thing to others) it must be called what it was — a full-on threat perpetrated by a bully who has forgotten that he was elected to office to protect Nevadans, not sound like he’s shaking them down.

“No citizen should expect this kind of behavior from a U.S. senator. It is certainly not becoming of a man who is the majority leader in the U.S. Senate. And it absolutely is not what anyone would expect from a man who now asks Nevadans to send him back to the Senate for a fifth term.

“If he thinks he can push the state’s largest newspaper around by exacting some kind of economic punishment in retaliation for not seeing eye to eye with him on matters of politics, I can only imagine how he pressures businesses and individuals who don’t have the wherewithal of the Review-Journal.

“For the sake of all who live and work in Nevada, we can’t let this bully behavior pass without calling out Sen. Reid. If he’ll try it with the Review-Journal, you can bet that he’s tried it with others. So today, we serve notice on Sen. Reid that this creepy tactic will not be tolerated.

“We won’t allow you to bully us. And if you try it with anyone else, count on going through us first.

“That’s a promise, not a threat.

“And it’s a promise to our readers, not to you, Sen. Reid.”

Spot on, Mr. Frederick.  Spot on.

How about sharing whatever it is you’re drinking with the rest of the mainstream media?

I wish we had our own dedicated research staff, but since we don’t, we’ll give credit to Glenn Beck’s.  Here is a list they recently published of the various “czars” that are in place in the Obama administration.  It is amusing to note that the White House has contacted Beck’s show a few times now – while they were on the air – and scolded them to stop calling these people “czars”.

But if they are in place duplicating effort at the sole choosing of the President, just what do you call them?  Other than calling some of them real, live left-wing radicals?

NOTE: positions that also existed under previous administrations are indicated with an *.

And it was, like, ‘This is what I need to be a part of.'” Although he already had a plane ticket, he decided to stay in San Francisco. “I spent the next ten years of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to be a revolutionary.” In the months that followed, he let go of any lingering thoughts that he might fit in with the status quo. “I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th, and then the verdicts came down on April 29th,” he said. “By August, I was a communist.” In 1994, the young activists formed a socialist collective, Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement, or STORM, which held study groups on the theories of Marx and Lenin and dreamed of a multiracial socialist utopia. “Clunker” Is Spelled O-B-A-M-A

August 24, 2009 By Joan of Snark

In a manner consistent with having to report bad news that politicians want to go as unnoticed as possible, late Friday the Obama administration announced that it has revised its own forecasts of the U.S. deficit.  Their 10-year projection is now being aligned with outside sources, including the Congressional Budget Office.  The number?  An unfathomable $9 trillion.

Look at it:

$9,000,000,000,000

That’s one hell of a lot of zeroes and one hell of a big, deep hole into which the Audacious One, his hand-picked, unaccountable czars, and unrepresenting Congress have thrown the American people.  And all the creative accounting that accompanies it, like removing $250 billion set aside for bank bailouts from this fiscal year’s budget, won’t make it go away.

But Obama and the left-wing socialists and Democrats are pushing on relentlessly in their quest for more and more spending.  I heard House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer saying the other day that they just “have to pass” a health care bill this year; even if you set aside the unspeakably cruel end results of putting bureaucrats and Obama advisors like Dr. Ezekiel Emmanuel into the position of inevitably rationing American health care, when the myriad “advisory” and “oversight” committees and federal employees required to attempt to manage 1/6th of the national economy are tossed into the equation, at bargain-basement prices the whole notion of the attempt at “health care reform” is nothing but a trillion dollar-albatross and my reaction to his words was, “Why?”  Why do we “have” to do this?

Obama recently told America’s religious leaders to encourage their congregations to label anyone who understands and supports the United States Constitution and therefore sees that socialized health care is wrong as someone who is “bearing false witness”.  He brought out yet again the old liberal saw of “moral imperative” to disguise the fact that this push for health care “reform” is really an attempt to legislate morality, and those who know even a little bit about history know how well that worked out during, say, the Inquisition.  The truth is that American taxpayers should never be asked to pay for those things that are the responsibility of the individual and the Founding Fathers did a brilliant job of setting up our government to help insure this.  It is up to individuals to make the choice to help their brother; government as Big Brother has been proven time and time again to be not only inefficient and therefore ineffective, but ultimately the root cause of corruption.  The Obama administration, in the guise of “economic stimulus” has already forced us to help pay the mortgages of our more stupid fellow Americans and to keep the more stupid of our automotive company employees (including union members; or is that especially union members?) employed.  They have forced us to help our fellow Americans to buy new cars via the “Cash for Clunkers” program, to the tune of some $3 billion (if you don’t include the existing costs of keeping all those federal employees occupied with busy work).  And in yet another show of big government competence, the auto companies are the ones paying the dealers because all those federal employees working for the administration can’t seem to manage to get rebate payments processed.

But what brilliance on the part of President Obama!  What a stimulus to our economy!  If you listen to the administration, you might get the impression that those auto companies the government bought for itself with billions of our hard-earned tax dollars would be reaping the benefits of such bright, Ivy League minds, right?

Wrong.  Clunker again:

TOP SELLERS

1. Toyota Corolla
2. Honda Civic
3. Ford Focus front-wheel drive
4. Toyota Camry
5. Hyundai Elantra
6. Toyota Prius
7. Nissan Versa
8. Ford Escape front-wheel drive
9. Honda Fit
10. Honda CR-V four-wheel drive

I’m not seeing Government Motors or Chrysler here, folks.  Are you?  And only two of the top sellers are American.  Where we do see GM and Chrysler, though, is in the list of clunkers being dumped:

TOP TRADE-INS

1. Ford Explorer four-wheel drive
2. Ford F-150 Pickup
3. Jeep Grand Cherokee
4. Jeep Cherokee
5. Ford Explorer two-wheel drive
6. Dodge Caravan/Grand Caravan two-wheel drive
7. Chevrolet Blazer four-wheel drive
8. Ford F-150 pickup four-wheel drive
9. Chevrolet C15000 pickup two-wheel drive
10. Ford Windstar front-wheel drive van

Half the “clunkers”, in fact.  This speaks volumes about the faith of the American people in our government-ruled, union-driven automotive industry.

I suspect more faith will be shattered when the news finally gets around that Social Security cost of living increases probably won’t happen for the next two years because of “negative inflation”, though premiums for Medicare Part B and Medicare drug coverage insurance are going to go up.  Not to mention that the way things stand today Social Security will be paying out more than it receives by 2016 and the fund will be completely wiped out by 2037.  (Though rumor now has it that Congress may be scheming to to appropriate every state’s pension plans into the bankrupt system.  That ought to be interesting….)

But the administration remains oblivious to such things, for it doesn’t fit within their reality.  That is why the United States has now agreed to loans and guarantee to Petrobras, so Brazil can drill for oil off its own coast.  Of course it’s merely coincidence that just a few days before the U.S. deal with Petrobras was announced, Obama’s big supporter, George Soros, shifted his holdings in Petrobras to preferred shares.

Nine trillion dollars and counting.  Yet ignoring the huge August recess outcries against his administration, Obama and leading Democrats are talking seriously about forcing socialized medicine on America by abusing the (budget) reconciliation process to pass their idea of health care reform legislation and putting even more huge debt onto America.  My first thought is that President Obama and his administration are, indeed, something that starts with the letter “C” but I’ll be polite and say they are the real clunkers.

Time To Boycott Communist & Radical Supporters

August 13, 2009 By Joan of Snark

Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Oh, woe are the progressive and Communist cohorts within the Obama administration.  It seems they’ve taken offense with Glenn Beck pointing out their divisive, anti-American connections and are calling on advertisors to boycott his television show on FOX.

Let’s see who has decided that paying for exposure during one of the late afternoon’s highest-viewed shows isn’t worth being harrassed by self-avowed Communists:

  • Geico Insurance
  • Lawyers.com
  • Progressive Insurance
  • Procter & Gamble
  • SC Johnson

Just as a bit of background, Progressive was founded by one left-wing philanthropist Peter B. Lewis.  Who is he?

  • Major donor to Democrat political candidates and leftist causes
  • In 2004 the list included $16 million to the Joint Victory Campaign, $2.9 million to America Coming Together, and $2.5 million to Move On.Org.  In February 2008, Lewis contributed money to the presidential campaign of Barack Obama. He is also a close friend of Democrat Senator Ted Kennedy.
  • Supports the legalization of marijuana
  • Close friend of George Soros
  • No great loss there.

But just who are the divisive, anti-Americans behind the boycott?  Of particular interest is the Obama administration’s “green jobs czar”, Van Jones.  You know, one of those people annointed … errr … appointed by the President and given great powers over the people without having to be vetted or confirmed by Congress.

Van Jones is a founding board member of Color of Change, often referred to as “an extremist racial grievance group” whose methods include stirring up racial antagonism in order to promote a socialist agenda.  (Sounds like a kissing cousin of ACORN, doesn’t it?)  Van Jones was also a founder and leader of the communist revolutionary organization Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement, aka STORM.  Speaking to the East Bay Express, Van Jones said he first became radicalized in the wake of the 1992 Rodney King riots, during which time he was arrested.

“I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th, and then the verdicts came down on April 29th,” he said. “By August, I was a communist.”

“I met all these young radical people of color – I mean really radical: communists and anarchists. And it was, like, ‘This is what I need to be a part of.’ I spent the next 10 years of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to be a revolutionary,” he said.

Just a shining example of morality this country needs, eh?

But now that their home boy done good, both Mr. Jones and Color of Change are trying to hide their connections from what they know full well are the majority of Americans who are, rightfully, less-than-sympathetic to either radicals or Communists.   From Newsbusters:

Now that Van Jones is in the news all the time, Color of Change doesn’t want you to know he helped start the group. Maybe having an avowed America-hating totalitarian radical on the group’s board is bad public relations.

The group deleted references to Jones on its “about” page. That page used to say, “James Rucker and Van Jones came together in the wake of [Hurricane] Katrina to use the organizing power of the Internet to give Black Americans and our allies a renewed and strengthened political voice.”

    But now it doesn’t.

The old page still exists in the Google cache.  (The cache will eventually be cleared, so for safekeeping, I made a PDF of the page here.) The 501(c)(4) group’s 2006 and 2007 tax returns (IRS Form 990) show Jones as a director.

Jones was also on the board of the Apollo Alliance, a hard-left environmentalist group that is now running large chunks of the Obama administration. Beck pounded away at the Apollo Alliance and Jones on a recent show.

I think that the sensible reaction to this kind of bullying, playground nonsense is to boycott the cowardly and in-the-commie-hip-pocket advertisers.  I also think it’s always a good idea to let businesses know why they are losing you as a customer so use the links below to tell them that caving in to the whining of entitlement radicals and the administration is bad business:

  • Geico Insurance
  • Lawyers.com
  • Progressive Insurance
  • Procter & Gamble
  • SC Johnson
  •

Stupid is not the failure of average Americans to believe the lies of the left, but that the left still believes Americans don’t see right through them.  Witness the latest marching orders from the White House:

All throughout August, our members of Congress are back in town. Insurance companies and partisan attack groups are stirring up fear with false rumors about the President’s plan, and it’s extremely important that folks like you speak up now.

So we’ve cooked up an easy, powerful way for you to make a big impression:  Office Visits for Health Reform.

All this week, OFA members like you will be stopping by local congressional offices to show our support for insurance reform. You can have a quick conversation with the local staff, tell your personal story, or even just drop off a customized flyer and say that reform matters to you.

We’ll provide everything you need:  the address, phone number, and open hours for the office, information about how the health care crisis affects your state for you to drop off (with the option of adding your personal story), and a step-by-step guide for your visit.

Click here to find your representatives’ local offices.

As you’ve probably seen in the news, special interest attack groups are stirring up partisan mobs with lies about health reform, and it’s getting ugly. Across the country, members of Congress who support reform are being shouted down, physically assaulted, hung in effigy, and receiving death threats. We can’t let extremists hijack this debate, or confuse Congress about where the people stand.

Office Visits for Health Reform are our chance to show that the vast majority of American voters know that the cost of inaction is too high to bear, and strongly support passing health reform in 2009.

Don’t worry if you’ve never done anything like this before. The congressional staff is there to listen, and your opinion as a constituent matters a lot. And if you bring a friend, you’ll have more fun and make an even greater impact.

Click here to sign up for an Office Visit for Health Reform.

Wherever you live, these visits matter:  Many representatives are pushing hard toward reform, and they are taking a lot of heat from special interests. They deserve our thanks and need our support to continue the fight. But those who are still putting insurance companies and partisan point-scoring ahead of their constituents must know that voters are watching — and that we expect better.

Earlier this week, the President wrote that “this is the moment our movement was built for” and asked us all to commit to join at least one event this month. This is the way to answer that call, and rise to the challenge of this moment together.

Thank you for going the extra mile when it matters the most,

    Mitch

    Mitch Stewart
    Director
    Organizing for America

In case you aren’t aware, “Organizing For America” is a partner of the Democratic National Committee.

“…Obama for America campaign manager David Plouffe introduced Mitch Stewart, who will serve as Director of Organizing for America.

Organizing for America will work in partnership with the DNC to continue to build, engage and strengthen the unprecedented organization that was built during the campaign and the grassroots network built over the past four years at the DNC. The joint partnership signifies the ongoing commitment to both building and strengthening the grassroots movement, and reaching out to people in all 50 states to engage Americans in this movement for change.

“I’m extremely pleased that Organizing for America will be housed here at the DNC.  Working in partnership, we will seek to engage people in new ways, and to broaden what President Obama calls the ‘Coalition for Change’ in America ,” said Governor Tim Kaine. “I know first-hand how important it is to reach out and engage the grassroots all across a state and all across our country.”

In addition to Mitch Stewart, the DNC also announced that Jeremy Bird will serve as [OFA] Deputy Director.

Mitch Stewart served as Iowa Caucus director, Indiana state director and Virginia state director for the Obama campaign. Before joining Obama’s campaign, Stewart was the coordinated campaign manager for the Democratic Farm Labor party in Minnesota in 2006, when Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D) won her race. In 2004, Stewart served as former South Dakota senator Tom Daschle’s field director. He was also a regional field director in Iowa for former senator John Edwards’ during his presidential bid in 2004.

Jeremy Bird served as Obama campaign field director in South Carolina during the primaries and general election director in Ohio .”

    Courtesty of Ron Hart:

“If Obama has his way, his health care plan will be funded by his Treasury chief who did not pay his taxes, overseen by his Surgeon General who is obese, signed by a president who smokes and financed by a country that is just about broke. What possibly could go wrong?”

“While discussing the upcoming Universal Health Care Program with my friend the other day, I think we have found the solution.  I am sure you have heard the ideas that if you’re a senior you need to suck it up and give up the idea that you need any health care.  A new hip?  Unheard of.  We simply can’t afford to take care of you anymore.  You don’t need any medications for your high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, etc.

“So here is the solution.  When you turn 70, you get a gun and 4 bullets.  You are allowed to shoot 2 senators and 2 representatives.  Of course, you will be sent to prison where you will get 3 meals a day, a roof over your head and all the health care you need.  New teeth, great!!!  Need glasses, no problem.  New hip, knee, kidney, lung, heart?  Well bring it on.

“Who will be paying for all of this?  The same government that just told you that you are too old for health care.

“And, since you are a prisoner, you don’t have to pay any income tax.”
