Compensating Unemployment

Sometimes you come across something so good, there is nothing to do but print it in its entirety.  So to that end, herein lies the true moral argument against unemployment compensation.

“When you demand I work for you because you exist
and in return I get to keep what you do not take,
I sense a wannabe master in my midst.”

According to the media, extended unemployment compensation may be coming to a permanent end.
The Republican political leadership does not want to extend compensation for unemployment short of
finding a way to do so without increasing the deficit. So the proposition of compensating
unemployment is not wrong, it is conditional. Democrats, on the other hand, teach that the
unemployed should be compensated because they need money, because their unemployment is no
fault of their own, and because compensating unemployment stimulates economic growth and creates
jobs. These politicians tell us these things so we believe them and reelect them. Neither perspective,
however, is principled or honest. Since we elect these people, they are considered our representatives.
So if they are unprincipled and dishonest, is it because we are unprincipled and dishonest or have we
just been deceived by them?

In all fairness, I should disclose a bias or two about this notion of indefinite compensation for
unemployment. I was raised in a household with a father who repeatedly stressed, “The man that does
not work ought not eat.” He became a Christian shortly after my birth. He started reading his Bible and
he happened upon this statement in 2 Thessalonians 3. He was persuaded by the truth of it and insisted
that my sisters and I work. Having made that admission, one does not need to read the Bible to figure
the relevance of personal contribution for coexistence. As the writer of the second letter to the
Thessalonians acknowledged, none should be a burden.

As voters, we have contrived a social system that allows everyone to be a burden; no one is responsible
for his own unless he wishes. His willingness for personal responsibility, however, does not exclude him
from the burden of those who cannot or will not assume responsibility for themselves and their own.
He simply manifests himself as one apt for freedom. He would be numbered among those who believe
that personal freedom is intrinsically linked to personal responsibility. There is no God-given right to
disassociate personal choices from personal consequences. There is no God-ordained public
responsibility for private choices. No one deserves anything because they need it. One can only deserve
what he earns. Need does not give money value nor is the value of money in the paper. The only
reason money has value is because of those who produce products and provide services; without them,
there would not be anything to buy. To the extent that one believes money is necessary and should be
had, one must either earn it, be gifted it, steal it, win it, or find it. For the money to be gifted, stolen,
won, or found, it must first be earned by someone. Hence, one is greater. Without the one, the others
cannot exist.

To use government to compensate unemployment, we must first violate those who earn their keep. We
must hold our interests, our significance, our life, our freedom in higher esteem than theirs, not because
we have added more value, but because we exist. We appeal to liberty to help ourselves to the fruit of
their labor and consider it justice because they earned it and we voted for it. Such delusions of grandeur
are not only degenerate, they, along with a host of other fantasies, are unconstitutional. This may go
unacknowledged by today’s Republican leadership, but it is a predominant offense to me. My ancestors
left enough stories of slavery for me to know it when I hear it proposed. When you demand I work for
you because you exist and in return I get to keep what you do not take, I sense a wannabe master in my
midst.

Again, I am not certain whether society has regressed to such foolishness because politicians told us that
our need, misfortune, and failure warranted compensation or whether they went about teaching that
because we required it of them. Nevertheless, I am certain that the only value associated with need is
motivation; specifically, it is motivation to change and adapt to acquire more control of one’s life.
Among those who believe in liberty and justice for all, our personal lives are the only ones we should be
living to control so that we do ourselves well instead of perpetuating our own demise.

There was a time in America when the man that did not work did not eat. He sought work to stay alive
and he usually found it. Today, that is not so because his freedom to negotiate with employers has been
impeded on several fronts, two of which are unionism and minimum wages. Michigan’s forced unionism
law prevents the unemployed from offering his services for less than the unions demand. The nation’s
minimum wage law restricts him from offering to work for less than $7.25 per hour. I do not figure it
matters much to the many dishonest and covetous among us, but to those who wish to live an
honorable life these impediments are most troublesome. It was not until last year that the President
and his Congress of merry men made it illegal to pay a person less than $7.25 per hour. So if a risk
analysis of a prospective employee does not warrant such expense, that person will remain
unemployed. Accordingly, more of us will remain unemployed. Democrats, like President Obama, Harry
Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Debbie Stabenow, Carl Levin, John Conyers, and Gary Peters understand this and
they expect for the unemployed to vote for them. Under the auspice of doing good, i.e. raising the
minimum wage, they have removed the option of self-preservation for an honorable, contributory life
and permanently unemployed a larger segment of the population.

While I am convinced that increasing minimum wage is a death sentence to many unemployed who do
not have money saved or a supportive social network, Democrats insist that the unemployed should be
compensated because they do not have jobs. This is not because of some intrinsic value or becoming
attribute of unemployment, it is so they can keep their political job and compensate us for our vote.
That process is commonly referred to as a kickback. And yes, it is unconstitutional for elected
representatives, including President Obama and a host of other presidents of times past, to support
such perks upon vowing to uphold the U.S. Constitution. This may or may not matter to you. I suppose
it depends on whether you believe we should simply be compensated for our existence, whether you
believe one’s disadvantage entitles him to another’s fortune, or whether you believe in liberty and
justice for all, as most of us Americans pledge.

We all know there is no public value gained by a person’s unemployment, yet we, the public, choose to
compensate it. Politicians tell us that our unemployment is no fault of our own. Who actually believes
that? How is it that our unemployment is no fault of our own? We chose our employer as our employer
chose us. We chose to remain with that employer until we were laid off. We chose the skill-sets and
the attitude that got us employed. If little got us employed, there was little to keep us employed. Why
are some still employed, while we are not? Could it be that they made different choices? Who voted
for the politicians that raised minimum wage and strengthened unions so that manufacturers flee the
country? If I believed politicians, I would have never become who I am. Am I the only one that fears
judgment by God? My unemployment does not give me a right to another’s income. My desire for a job
does not give me a right to a job. This is reality; it humbles me. Who, under God, considers himself
exempt from the simple commands against covetousness and theft? There can be no peace among a
people who believe they have an unearned right to the person or property of another.

If making false claims of value and innocence for unemployment fell short, politicians also claim using
government to compensate unemployment stimulates economic growth and creates jobs. One could
address this as one would claims of public good associated with minimum wages. If raising minimum
wage is such a public good, why not raise it to $10, $20, or $30 per hour? Doing so, as noted above,
would increase our unemployable population. We all may think we are worth more, but our challenge is
to identify someone who is willing to pay us what we think we are worth. In this same sense, if
compensating unemployment stimulates economic growth and creates jobs, why combat it? Why don’t
we increase the compensation for unemployment? Some of us could sit back and get paid for existing
while the others work to finance our leisure. Of course, increasing unemployment compensation would
only motivate more people to seek payment for unemployment in the same sense that compensating
poverty increases the population of people wishing to be compensated for poverty. Despite political
claims, neither increasing nor extending unemployment compensation perpetuates economic growth or
creates jobs. That is a ridiculous, bold-faced lie. It may be the lie that we demand of our politicians, but
it is a lie. Economic growth is stimulated only by productivity, not sloth.

As Americans, we have ventured so far from the founding principles of America that our Constitution
borders upon irrelevance. We do not know it and we possess little or no understanding of what we
should be as a nation. While America was founded to be different from all other countries, we now
aspire to be as the others. To whom should they appeal for hope?

Since we all can vote, we are both citizens and leaders. As leaders we have made a lot of bad choices
making for more bad citizens. If it is possible to deserve the unearned, if one has an unearned right to
another’s person or property, why is theft, murder, and rape criminalized? If your success entitles me to
your income, if my desire requires your sacrifice, what has become of your God-given right to life,
liberty, and pursuit of happiness? Does just any law make right or are there underlying principles to
which we, as Americans, are subject in forming our legislation? The idea of public compensation for
unemployment may sound good, just like a minimum wage and compensation for poverty sounds good,
but the social and public consequences of the policies are worsening. They will continue to worsen until
we change our ways and our expectations. You, I, we only deserve what we have earned and we do not
deserve until we have earned. Regardless of our personal income or a politician’s claim, we, through
our federal government, do not have a right to tell others how to use their earnings. Until we accept
and embrace the truth, I am convinced that America can forget the blessings of God regardless of its
prayers, its origin, or its currency. Personal freedom devoid of personal responsibility ensures our
national peril.

Crybaby Barbie’s Warning About Evil Rich Parents

At least according to Barbara (“call me Senator”) Boxer, rich parents are evil.  After both of this morning’s tax increase smackdown votes on the Senate floor, crybaby Barbie took to the podium to deliver what was, I’m sure, in her mind at least, a chiding lecture on the failure of that august body to do right by the poor, hapless American people.  (The same people who voted to replace Democrats in Congress in numbers not seen since 1938 but who’s counting?)  In it she sternly told us that if the “wealthy”* were allowed to continue to keep the money they earned by not increasing taxes on them right now, all they’d do with it is “put it into a trust fund for their children”.

Apparently only the “little people” are entitled to look out for their children’s future.  In progressive liberal la-la land it is the responsibility of the rich to look out for everyone else’s children by contributing more and more of their income to overpay some federal bureaucrat to pass it out as entitlements to the vaguely-defined victim…errr..prospective Democrat voter-du-joeur.

Last time I checked it was neither a sin nor against the law to work hard and accumulate large sums of money.  And if people like Crybaby Barbie find having a stash so wrong, it isn’t against the law for them to write a big, fat check to the IRS, either.

But they don’t, do they?

Wealthy:  A squishy, shapeshifting line drawn between those whose income reaches $250,000 or $1 million a year and those whose icome does not; its exact location dependent solely upon the level of desperation felt by a Democrat on any given day.

Gun Butt Cover

His Transparency is feeling the cold breeze sneaking in through the open back of his hospital gown and, besides the doubling-down cram-through brawls that await us during this lame-duck session, he’s finally decided to nominate Chicago brown-noser Andrew Traver to permanently lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

In the astute words of Bob Owens, President Walking Eagle has nominated a pedophile to run the local PTA.  While he’s allegedly a “nice enough guy”, he’s anti-gun and an incompetent middle-level leader.  Certainly not the type one would choose to clean up the corruption in any organization.

But if the Senate is stupid enough to confirm his nomination, he’ll help close that flapping gown by taking the blame for pushing the progressive liberal anti-gun agenda.

Spinning RINOs

While I sit in awe at the super-sized egomaniacal ignorance being displayed by Democrats, His Transparency in particular, trying desperately to justify their kamikaze crash-and-burn midterm election failures by actually saying out loud that Americans simply weren’t “pursuaded” enough by misunderstood “arguments” for the thinly-disguised slavery this administration and Democrat-majority Congress forced onto them, my other half is fascinated with the post-election spinning that because Angle lost in Nevada and O’Donnell lost in Delaware and Miller may have lost in Alaska the Tea Party is some sort of “failure”.

My reply is that this is little more than the smoke & mirrors of RINO guilt attempting to distract anyone with even one brain cell firing on 1/2 a cylinder that the reason Angle and O’Donnell and Miller lost is because the GOP refused to acknowledge that we, the people, had made our choice of GOP candidates and therefore refused to provide them with any real support. A guilty distraction that is, of course, glommed onto with great glee by the smacked-down Democrats to salve their soundly-whipped little egos.

Rush had it right on his radio show yesterday. Just where was the RNC while these so- called “Tea Party” candidates gave career politicians a real run for their money? Did, for examply, Democrat-lite RINO Lindsay Graham lift a finger to help what the people had said were now effectively his party? Nope. Nothing but the sound of crickets.  Because of the GOP’s failure to honor the will of the people, they must now attempt to marginalize and criticize so as to not lose their precious lobbyist support (read:  get rich off your tax dollars) and self-perceived importance in the old boy’s club; even threatening Senator Jim DeMint with a “co-opting” of his conservative freshmen.

Obama and Pelosi and Reid apparently demoralized the Democrat base so much that many of them didn’t even bother to vote. (Though based on CNN’s exit polls that show Democrat voters think Congress’ highest priority should be on even more spending instead of reducing the deficit and cutting taxes it’s perhaps a good thing they found other things to do.)  But on the flip side, Graham and his ilk are the reason many voted for the GOP while holding their noses. Snake-oil salesmen soil seats on both sides of the aisle in Washington but I have two words for them:

The End Of Federal Money-Laundering?

Taxes are a big theme in this year’s midterm election mudslinging contest.  It is not just a response to the current administration’s obvious attempts to crush the productive in order to maintain their personal wealth and delusions of power but rather quite a normal reflex.  Humans, being just another species of animal (regardless what self-perceived elitists like to think about themselves and others in their little herd), are normally self-protective, selfish, and therefore not really very generous until such time as they, themselves, feel their personal needs have been safely and securely met.

Progressives, in their contempt for the protections of  the fallibility of humans as written into the governing documents of the Republic by our Founding Fathers, have always known this.  And they have used it for their own equally selfish advantage by professing to offer something for nothing to those who have not fairly earned it.  The ideology of “distributing the wealth” plays on the inherently sympathetic nature of the inherently self-protective, using age-old exhortations to Man’s “higher nature” to press the guilt button and thereby gain acquiese to more and more of the fruits of their labors.

I see the rise of the Tea Party as a logical response to this theft.  And I have come to see the idiocy in believing there can be much (if any) good in what is essentially money laundering by the federal government.  The Enumerated Powers were quite clear yet today we pay thousands and thousands of bureaucrats two and three times the going rate to decide how we should be spending our money on things in which the federal government simply does not belong.  In the same way Jesus is reported to have overturned the tables of the money-changers in the temple, so now does the Tea Party stand to overturn the same thievery that has become the federal government.

What good does it to give money to what is essentially a charitable endeavor (food stamps, welfare, Social Security, even education) but allow a big bite to be taken out of it before it may be used as originally intended?  What most readily recognize as a charity gets double-dipped for they must give money to the federal government in order to be recognized as doing charitable work in the first place; then our tax dollars pay thousands of bureaucrats to monitor the flow of money from donor to recipient.  Would it not be better to be able to hand over some of your dollars directly to someone who is, say, stocking a food pantry and know that it is going to be spent on food, rather than going first to subsidize some bureaucrat’s above-average lifestyle?  Would you not be more willing to donate in the first place, and even to donate more?

I know I would.  And for anyone who thinks that this tax-loving bureaucratic micro-regulating of charities is a good idea, I would only point to organizations like ACORN and ask you just how well has that worked out?  In this age of free-flowing information, I would err on the thought that word of mouth about organizations pocketing more than reasonable expenses (United Way, anyone?) would spread quickly and they would soon find their donations dropping; the worst would have to close their doors and the userers in charge would have to go out and earn a real living.

The same can be said for unions, which have become little more than the worst kind of charities.  The truth is, teachers and teamsters, that your Viagra is not my problem and if you think your dues can make it so, just ask Jimmy Hoffa what happened to Michigan.  Even banks, when subject to the free-flow of information in a truly free market, would not stay in business very long when they force responsible customers to pay for their loans to customers who are less responsible.

The federal government has long overstepped its bounds and their demonstrations of entitlement to do so become more clear each day.  Why else is President Walking Eagle stumping around the country inciting violence towards those who disagree with his socialist policies – on our dime?  I don’t recall that calling those who don’t want to pay to support millions more people with entitlements the “enemy” was part of his job description.  But it is certainly in the job description of we, the people, to find and to root out the enemies both without and within.

And that is why November 2nd is so important.  There are lamestream media squeakings this morning about sending the “inexperienced” into our “complicated” contemporary federal government machine in Washington.  But at the end of the day and in the final analysis it is exactly such “inexperience” that is needed to cut the crap if we don’t want Americans to end up in Greece or France without need for a passport and plane ride.  They are needed to walk those Democrat-desecrated hallowed halls wielding the scalpel about which His Transparency lied during the 2008 election campaign and then use it to cut out the heart of progressive liberalism whether it comes in the guise of an ass or a RINO and restore the Republic; beholden to no one except those who sent them there to do that very job.

As the Justice Department would say, “Bring out your dead and vote early and often.”

A Class Act He’s Not

In the continuing adventures of The 2010 Election Story That Goes Unreported, in the heart of the Rust Belt known as Michigan’s 12th Congressional district, a food bank was recently opened.  A beautiful thing, this; neighbors stepping up and taking on the responsibility to help neighbors in what is the worst district in the nation for loss of income, loss of jobs and loss of home values.

Two of the candidates running for the House seat in this most-battered and beleagured of blue districts recently attended the opening of this small, grassroots charitable effort.  The wealthy incumbent Democrat, Sander Levin, annointed by progressive liberal Nancy Pelosi to be the chair of the House Ways & Means Committee due to his 28-year seniority in the House, took a break from campaigning for his colleagues in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois to return to his district and make a brief appearance.

His GOP challenger, small business owner Don Volaric, was there, too.  The same way he has been at the church that opened the food bank on numerous Sunday mornings.  He brought with him boxes of foodstuffs purchased by his wife to help fill the shelves of the sorely-needed pantry.

Sander Levin showed up with only a photographer to record his appearance.

The RINO Message: “We want your votes but not your candidates”

In an email today from Jim DeMint:

As you know, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski lost the Republican primary to her conservative challenger, Joe Miller, in a fair fight. But instead of graciously conceding and endorsing the Republican nominee, Murkowski announced that she will continue her campaign as an independent write-in candidate.

Senate Republicans held a closed-door meeting yesterday afternoon to elect someone to replace Senator Murkowski as the top Republican on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Or so we thought.

Rather than taking away Murkowski’s leadership position on the committee, Senate Republicans decided to let her keep it. One senator after another stood up to argue in favor of protecting her place on the committee — a position she will no doubt use in her campaign against Joe Miller, the conservative Republican nominee.

It was bad enough to watch my colleagues work to support her in the primary after she had built a record of betraying conservatives principles. But watching them back her after she left the party and launched a campaign against the Republican nominee was more than I could bear.

I spoke out against the motion and I voted against it. But the good ol’ boys Senate club, which always protects its own, prevailed. The motion was adopted by secret ballot and the final tally was not disclosed.

More from Marc Thiessen:

In an interview, [Joe] Miller told me he is confident that he can win with Murkowski in the race: “She was given her job and now she thinks she deserves it. She has disrespected the will of the Alaskan voter. We had the largest turnout of any Republican primary in the history of the state of Alaska. The race was won fair and square. And then in the wake of that, she claims that the election was ‘hijacked’ and that it was a group of ‘extremists’ that voted for me. It gets down to the fact that she perceives herself as entitled, and she can’t let go of the power she’s held for the last eight years.”

In that sense of entitlement, Murkowski is not alone. All last week, we heard the GOP establishment complain how the Tea Party is threatening Republican unity by pursuing “ideological purity” at the expense of a “big tent” party. But Tea Party-endorsed candidates are the ones who have stayed within the GOP tent. Rather than launching destructive third-party bids, fiscally conservative insurgents have contested GOP primaries — and when they have lost, they have endorsed their establishment opponents virtually without fail.

Contrast that with the record of the establishment candidates. When it became clear Charlie Crist would lose to Marco Rubio in Florida’s Senate race, Crist bolted the GOP and decided to run as an independent. When Arlen Specter saw he would lose to Pat Toomey in Pennsylvania’s Senate race, he became a Democrat. And, after losing the GOP nomination in Alaska, Murkowski is running as an independent write-in candidate. And yet, we are told that it is the Tea Party that is dividing the GOP and threatening party unity. For establishment candidates, unity seems to be a one-way street. The message to Tea Party activists across the country is:  We want your votes but not your candidates.

Read that last sentence again:  We want your votes but not your candidates.  That, dear readers, is the root of all angst (or should I say “disgust”) now being demonstrated by the average American voter.  The average American voter who, when push comes to shove, is conservative and pragmatic, common sense and bottom line.  Sure, a majority of these folks voted for “hope” and “change” but paying for other people’s mortgages, abortions, and business miscalculations (not to mention padding the personal bank accounts of unrepresenting representatives a la Rangel, Dodd et al) wasn’t exactly how they defined it and the sea change being demonstrated by RINO and progressive liberal losses to “nobody” conservative candidates is the manifestation of their buyer’s remorse.

We have plenty of politicians in Washington.  What we want and what we need are representatives of we, the people.  Despite those claims of honor among thieves it is apparently asking too much of either the GOP or the DNC to face the firing squad squarely; it appears they’ll wake up November 3rd looking like proverbial deer in the headlights.  Doesn’t say much for their claims of being the “best and brightest”, does it?  Particularly when the warnings signs are clear.  A friend of mine recently received a solicitation from the Republican National Committee and sent it back; in the space for an “other” donation amount they noted they had made a nice-sized donation directly to Sharron Angle’s Senate campaign in Nevada.  Other shots like this are being sent across the bow every day; I told my local GOP House candidate just last week that if, when he gets to Washington, he becomes what we’ve come to expect as a stereotypical politician I would personally kick his butt.  But therein lies the task that faces us:  we must become personally involved in governing this great Republic and we must remain personally involved.  It is complacency that is the biggest reason America now faces such an uncertain future, therefore it is a return to vigilence that is our personal and individual responsibility if we wish to bequeath something better than federal slavery to our children.

What Really Counts

August 15, 2010 By Joan of Snark

The Wall Street Journal posted an article about His Transparency’s cross-country “cash dash” to raise campaign money for Democrats this coming week before hitting Martha’s Vineyard for yet another vacation, raising the question of whether it will help or hurt those candidates in November.  The gist of the article is that elections all come down to money and this trip is all about prying it out of the wallets of the rich and famous:

Mr. Obama will travel to Milwaukee Monday to raise money for Mayor Tom Barrett’s Wisconsin gubernatorial bid. That night, he will attend a dinner for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee at the Los Angeles home of West Wing television producer John Wells, co-hosted by the likes of Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Barbra Streisand, among others. The entrance fee for the cocktail reception: $2,500 a person.  Add a presidential photo and the title of co-host and the figure jumps to $30,400 a couple.

There is a thinly-veiled attempt by the administration to make it appear to be a business trip (“Sandwiched in between will be a speech on his exports push and a visit to an energy-storage company….”) but the article states what is obvious:  “politics is pre-eminent.”

And so a fool and their money are soon parted.  President Walking Eagle and the Democrats may think big campaign coffers are a means to their nefarious ends of redistributing the weath to those who have not honestly earned it (with a hefty skim off the top for themselves, of course), but on November 2nd all the money in the world isn’t going to change the fact that voters – ordinary, hard-working, tax-paying Americans like you and me – are going to walk into voting booths around the country and cast ballots in favor not of a political party, but in favor of the Founders and the Constitution.  Meaning, all the mean-spirited attack ads on television, all the flyer drops and emails from progressive-pushing outfits like moveon.org will only further inflame the average American’s distaste for the socialism and politicizing and political correctness already crammed down their throats by this administration and Congress and they are going to quietly vote in favor of conservative thinkers and those who haven’t spent half their lives breathing the stale air in Washington.

Because at the end of the day on November 2nd, it’s not about money.  It is about votes.  Those of us who are hanging on by a thread due to economic and other policies too-long dictated by political cronyism and egos that cause us to pay more and more for ever-larger numbers of government bureaucrats and “entitlements” for self-perceived “victims”, including criminals, may not have money to donate to those candidates who would begin to help us restore our beloved Republic but we can, and I predict that we will, give them our blessing in the form of our votes.

And that is why His Transparency’s so-called “Midas touch” will fail.  Tea Parties are just the tip of the iceberg that is the silent American majority.  A silent majority who sees as bullying the derision heaped upon those who voice their beliefs in America’s founding ideas and sees as unethical the utter lack of responsibility encouraged by the progressive liberal ideology.  A silent majority who sees the hypocrisy in the federal government suing Arizon over legislating reinforcement of federal law while ignoring the fact that California has the very same law on its own books.  A silent majority who knows you don’t sign a contract (or vote for a bill) unless you know exactly what’s in it.  A silent majority who knows that “illegal” means “criminal” and who believes that, if for no other reason, simple consideration of the unending pain still felt by others would trump even thinking about building a monument of sorts to Islam anywhere near the site where the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center fell at the hands of Islamic jihadists on 9/11.

America’s silent majority has at long last come to realize that government “of the people” means every individual must be informed and involved and that their most effective weapon is their vote.

Not the amount of money in some campaign coffer earmarked for a smear ad against one’s political opponent.

The August primaries kick off today with voters in Kansas, Missouri, and bleeding-blue Michigan heading out to the polls to create the election slates for November.  Tomorrow will be a good indicator of just how bloody the next few months will be as turnout numbers are released.

I hope the Democrats have their Depends and binkies within reach.

Remember, if you don’t vote, don’t bitch.
