Protect The Government Worker By Starving The Poor

From an analysis of what’s taken Congress so long to extend unemployment benefits comes this mind-boggling gem:

Democrats also maintain hopes of passing a $16 billion aid package for governors aimed at preserving the jobs of tens of thousands of state workers through the election. They intend to pay for it in part by cutting food stamp benefits.

Only in the minds of progressive liberals can blossom the precious idea that protecting the jobs of government employees, many of whom are unionized and the ever-increasing numbers of which are a goodly part of America’s deficit problem,is more important than making sure the poor can eat by giving them food stamps.

Steering The Titanic

Many of us feel that we are fighting a war.  A war of ideologies that pits the takers against the givers, self-perceived elitist power-mongers against the ordinary citizen; an epic battle of the best of human good against the worst of human evil.  And in the heat of this battle, seemingly for the very soul of arguably the greatest country in the history of mankind, there come moments in which those who would preserve those things that have made America a shining beacon of hope for the world can naught but succumb to despair.

As we celebrate this miraculous day of Independence of these United States, it is with profound gratefulness that we bow our heads in prayers of thankfulness and in prayers of hope.  And share with you words of encouragement as we gird our proverbial loins for the next and oh-so-critical battle that looms ahead.

Please click here.

Happy Independence Day, America.

Deliberately Making Bad Worse

Picture this….

Oval Office, April 22, 2010

“Hey, Rahm; this Deepwater thingie…it’s pretty bad, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, Barry.  It’s pretty bad.  Those Dutch assholes, and I swear a dozen pf their pansy-ass buddies, have called here several times with this offer and that offer; the bastards want to sail over right now and ‘help us’ with the containment and cleanup.  I told them all to go to hell.  We can’t allow any foreign ships or foreign workers in our waters.”

“Oh, good point.  This spill is just the thing we need to move ahead again on cap and trade.  Can’t have the unions pissed off at us before that happens, can we?”

“Nope.  The worse this thing gets, the better it is for us to push ahead with clamping down on the rest of that fucked-up private sector.”

“Hey, Rahm?”

“What now, Barry?”

“You don’t think anyone is going to find out about this, do you?  I mean, we let BP drill like that without anyone really looking over their paperwork for their permits after they gave my campaign all that money.”

“I suppose that one of those Tea Baggers will dig up something about your campaign’s contributions.  Another reason we need to keep the heat on that old hag, Pelosi, and make sure she gets DISCLOSE passed.  Quick.  That will divert those right-wing terrorists for a while.”

“I guess we can blame that stupid MMS for not doing their job, too.  Right?  Most of those people were hired by Bush, weren’t they?  We can say it’s Bush’s fault; that it’s just another problem we inherited from him.”

“Exactly, Barry.  Bush hired a bunch of incompetant morons and it takes time to get them all cleaned out.”

“Excuse me, Mr. Emmanuel?”

“What the hell do you want?  Can’t you see we’re busy in here?”

“I’m sorry, sir, but that Dutchman is on the phone again.  They saw the news today and are urging you to reconsider their offer of help.”

“Tell them to go fuck themselves.”

“Yes, sir.”

Now fast forward to today.  I’m posting this piece in its entirety since it says all that needs to be said.

Avertible Catastrophe

Lawrence Solomon, Financial Post · Saturday, Jun. 26, 2010

Some are attuned to the possibility of looming catastrophe and know how to head it off. Others are unprepared for risk and even unable to get their priorities straight when risk turns to reality.

The Dutch fall into the first group. Three days after the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico began on April 20, the Netherlands offered the U.S. government ships equipped to handle a major spill, one much larger than the BP spill that then appeared to be underway. “Our system can handle 400 cubic metres per hour,” Weird Koops, the chairman of Spill Response Group Holland, told Radio Netherlands Worldwide, giving each Dutch ship more cleanup capacity than all the ships that the U.S. was then employing in the Gulf to combat the spill.

To protect against the possibility that its equipment wouldn’t capture all the oil gushing from the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, the Dutch also offered to prepare for the U.S. a contingency plan to protect Louisiana’s marshlands with sand barriers. One Dutch research institute specializing in deltas, coastal areas and rivers, in fact, developed a strategy to begin building 60-mile-long sand dikes within three weeks.

The Dutch know how to handle maritime emergencies. In the event of an oil spill, The Netherlands government, which owns its own ships and high-tech skimmers, gives an oil company 12 hours to demonstrate it has the spill in hand. If the company shows signs of unpreparedness, the government dispatches its own ships at the oil company’s expense. “If there’s a country that’s experienced with building dikes and managing water, it’s the Netherlands,” says Geert Visser, the Dutch consul general in Houston.

In sharp contrast to Dutch preparedness before the fact and the Dutch instinct to dive into action once an emergency becomes apparent, witness the American reaction to the Dutch offer of help. The U.S. government responded with “Thanks but no thanks,” remarked Visser, despite BP’s desire to bring in the Dutch equipment and despite the no-lose nature of the Dutch offer –the Dutch government offered the use of its equipment at no charge. Even after the U.S. refused, the Dutch kept their vessels on standby, hoping the Americans would come round. By May 5, the U.S. had not come round. To the contrary, the U.S. had also turned down offers of help from 12 other governments, most of them with superior expertise and equipment –unlike the U.S., Europe has robust fleets of Oil Spill Response Vessels that sail circles around their make-shift U.S. counterparts.

Why does neither the U.S. government nor U.S. energy companies have on hand the cleanup technology available in Europe? Ironically, the superior European technology runs afoul of U.S. environmental rules. The voracious Dutch vessels, for example, continuously suck up vast quantities of oily water, extract most of the oil and then spit overboard vast quantities of nearly oil-free water. Nearly oil-free isn’t good enough for the U.S. regulators, who have a standard of 15 parts per million — if water isn’t at least 99.9985% pure, it may not be returned to the Gulf of Mexico.

When ships in U.S. waters take in oil-contaminated water, they are forced to store it. As U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, the official in charge of the clean-up operation, explained in a press briefing on June 11, “We have skimmed, to date, about 18 million gallons of oily water–the oil has to be decanted from that [and] our yield is usually somewhere around 10% or 15% on that.” In other words, U.S. ships have mostly been removing water from the Gulf, requiring them to make up to 10 times as many trips to storage facilities where they off-load their oil-water mixture, an approach Koops calls “crazy.”

The Americans, overwhelmed by the catastrophic consequences of the BP spill, finally relented and took the Dutch up on their offer — but only partly. Because the U.S. didn’t want Dutch ships working the Gulf, the U.S. airlifted the Dutch equipment to the Gulf and then retrofitted it to U.S. vessels. And rather than have experienced Dutch crews immediately operate the oil-skimming equipment, to appease labour unions the U.S. postponed the clean-up operation to allow U.S. crews to be trained.

A catastrophe that could have been averted is now playing out. With oil increasingly reaching the Gulf coast, the emergency construction of sand berns to minimize the damage is imperative. Again, the U.S. government priority is on U.S. jobs, with the Dutch asked to train American workers rather than to build the berns. According to Floris Van Hovell, a spokesman for the Dutch embassy in Washington, Dutch dredging ships could complete the berms in Louisiana twice as fast as the U.S. companies awarded the work. “Given the fact that there is so much oil on a daily basis coming in, you do not have that much time to protect the marshlands,” he says, perplexed that the U.S. government could be so focussed on side issues with the entire Gulf Coast hanging in the balance.

Then again, perhaps he should not be all that perplexed at the American tolerance for turning an accident into a catastrophe. When the Exxon Valdez oil tanker accident occurred off the coast of Alaska in 1989, a Dutch team with clean-up equipment flew in to Anchorage airport to offer their help. To their amazement, they were rebuffed and told to go home with their equipment. The Exxon Valdez became the biggest oil spill disaster in U.S. history–until the BP Gulf spill.

Dems DISCLOSE More Free-Speech Clamp-Downs

June 22, 2010 By Joan of Snark

As expected, the Democrats response to the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission was to try and hurry up a way to shut down the free speech of those who are vigorously opposing their ramrod, socialist tactics; opposition they fearfully know will only increase as the November mid-term elections draw near.

On April 29, 2010, Representative Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) introduced H.R. 5175, 180-degree-from-intention-titled, the “Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections” (DISCLOSE) Act.  Essentially, what this bill does is put back all sorts of campaign finance reporting requirements, including putting the names of top donors into television ads.  It’s yet another descent into that special hell known as federal government bureacracy for organizations both large and small but what is even more disconcerting than this end-run around free speech is that in order to buy enough votes to pass it, the bill has been altered so as to exempt some of the Democrats’ largest opponents of it.  Like the NRA.

By calculatingly setting criteria for exemption from their stringent disclosure requirements to outside groups with no less than 500,000 with members in 50 states, that have existed for at least 10 years and  accept no more than 15 percent of their funding from corporate or union sources, the running-scared progressive liberals are clearly seeking to shut down the ability of newer, smaller conservative groups like the Tea Parties to exercise their right to free speech during the mid-term elections.

Another vote on this hits the floor of the House tomorrow.  The following are key House members who should be contacted and encouraged to vote NO:

Commentary: Detroit hosts leftist cavalcade

We’ve noted here before that they walk amongst us so it’s always refreshing to see someone in the media recognizing it as well.  We couldn’t have said the following any better so are posting Nolan Finley’s editorial in its entirety.  (Link to original at the end.)

The late state Sen. Joe Mack once said of the downstate backpackers who thought they knew more about what was best for his Upper Peninsula district than he did: “They come up here with a $5 bill and a pair of underwear and never change either one.”

Up that to $20 to account for inflation and it pretty well describes the crowd thronging to Detroit this week for the 2010 U.S. Social Justice Forum.

This ain’t no tea party.

The forum is a hootenanny of pinkos, environuts, peaceniks, Luddites, old hippies, Robin Hoods and urban hunters and gatherers. In other words, a microcosm of the Obama administration.

Up to 20,000 of them are expected in Detroit, although the actual count is hard to pinpoint since they’ll be sleeping in tents and 14 to a hotel room. Their mission is to tear down Wall Street and use the bricks to pave a Main Street where everyone lives in racial and social harmony, nobody has too little or too much, and food, shelter, transportation, education, clothing and cell phones are inalienable rights provided by a benevolent government and funded by — well, they’ll let someone else worry about paying the bills.

The actual event starts Tuesday. But the opening act got under way Saturday with the three-day Assembly of Jews: Confronting Racism and Israeli Apartheid. Of course. You can’t have social justice without giving Israel a good, hard kick.

The agenda is loose. According to the event website, it will mostly be an opportunity for jawboning by every possible grievance group, from transgendered Teamsters to tree huggers traumatized because their favorite redwood is now a deck in Bloomfield Hills. Every wart on American society will be mapped and lamented.

Organizers say the forums are transformational, noting the gathering held in Brazil in 2001 led to the election of the socialist, America-bashing Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as president. But since we’ve already elected a socialist, America-bashing president, the event may be anticlimactic politically.

They also promise the forum will be “a people’s bailout for Detroit” that will make the city “a model for a just transition to a green 21st century economy.”

The last thing a city crippled by an entitlement culture needs to hear is that there is a handout bonanza coming that will spare it the hard work of rebuilding Detroit through individual initiative and raw, messy capitalism.

But the forum could serve an informative purpose. Take a good look at our guests as you step across their sleeping bags on Detroit’s sidewalks.

As incredible as it seems, they’re the ones winning the policy debates in Washington. Congress is frantically enacting their agenda, and they’ve got their man in the White House. You can bet had Barack Obama not been elected president, he’d be in Detroit this week teaching a community organizing class.

If we don’t come to our senses in November, this is what the whole country will look like soon.

“We grew up with livestock and obviously we misunderstood how fences work.
We thought they had to be contiguous, surrounding the area;
didn’t know you could just put up a little piece and it would work.”
(Jim Ed Miller, Fort Hancock, Texas)

It’s not a good sign for President Walking Eagle and his administration when the lame-stream media begins to do dip its toes into real news reporting about serious problems that are not being properly addressed. One example is found in this ABC News report about life along the Texas border with Mexico.

The Newest Enemy Of Liberals: Best Friends

June 19, 2010 By Joan of Snark

One thing that stands out about progressive liberals is their fear.  Perhaps their greatest fear is that they aren’t good enough to make the cut, so instead of working on themselves, gaining knowledge, building skills, they take the wasteful tack of tearing down others to their level of incompetence.  It is the root cause of entitlement mentality derangement syndrome and why His Transparency was able to successfully cloak a skimpy resume accompanied with the false message of “hope and change”.

But the truth is that there is no such thing as a free lunch.  To get ahead you have to work hard, and you often have more failures than successes.  What we see in our schools today, however, is a rigid “no failure” posture.  Johnny didn’t study for Friday’s test as hard as Janey and therefore can’t properly answer all the questions?  That’s ok.  It’s not really Johnny’s fault (or even his parents’ fault) so we’ll give him a pass.  As the years roll on, Johnny continues to be coddled like some hot house flower and is eventually graduated with a serious lack of knowledge and skills but a strong sense he can do no wrong and that he’ll be taken care of regardless his effort or outcome.  Janey, too, is left with a sense that effort doesn’t really matter; both are left lacking the skills required to push ahead when the going gets tough or any understanding of accomplishment or the pride that comes with it.

In the real world, Johnny would be deemed incompetant and passed over for his lack of knowledge.  Indeed, this is the reality now faced by the current generation of our coddled graduates; is it any wonder that young people voted for President Walking Eagle in record numbers?  He is a walking, talking poster child for this twist on the Peter Principle (the theory that a person will rise to the level of their incompetance).  And it is this reality that the progressive liberals fight with tooth and nail in their fear-filled howls of protest against “big business”, “oligarchies”, and “greedy corporations”.

Now, if attempting to equalize outcomes isn’t bad enough, progressive liberals are dangerously taking this idea even farther.  Marc Thiessen points to an article in The New York Times that has outed their latest “we, the sheeple” ideology:  best friends are a bad thing.

…the classic best-friend bond — the two special pals who share secrets and exploits, who gravitate to each other on the playground and who head out the door together every day after school — signals potential trouble for school officials intent on discouraging anything that hints of exclusivity, in part because of concerns about cliques and bullying.

“I think it is kids’ preference to pair up and have that one best friend. As adults — teachers and counselors — we try to encourage them not to do that,” said Christine Laycob, director of counseling at Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School in St. Louis. “We try to talk to kids and work with them to get them to have big groups of friends and not be so possessive about friends.”

“Parents sometimes say Johnny needs that one special friend,” she continued. “We say he doesn’t need a best friend.”

To be sure, bullying has as much place in the schoolyard as it does at the dinner table or in the board room, but to use the fear of bullying in our schools to deny children the means of learning how and when to trust others by deliberately stripping away their opportunity to form close bonds with one another is both absurd and dangerous.  Not receiving an invitation to your best friend’s birthday party does not have the same ramifications as not receiving an offer for a much-needed job.  Yet it is through dealing with such tough denials by others from within the safety of the family that we learn the skills needed to survive and, indeed, to thrive.

“No one can teach you what a great friend is, what a fair-weather friend is, what a treacherous and betraying friend is except to have a great friend, a fair-weather friend or a treacherous and betraying friend,” said Michael Thompson, a psychologist who is an author of the book “Best Friends, Worst Enemies: Understanding the Social Lives of Children.”

While in can be argued that schools are one of the most important environments in which our children learn social skills, it is not the school’s responsibility to control a child’s relationships unless it directly interferes with the school’s primary directive:  the teaching of information.  The responsibility for managing a child’s relationships properly belongs to their parents; a responsibility American society continues to abdicate to others with dangerous agendas at greater and greater risk.
